D-Zine Volume 3 :
GraphicStandards

When you need to choose the width of a side menu or the height of a top menu, instead of just picking a random size, you might benefit from adopting more or less well established standard sizes.

There aren't many well established standards, but the tendency is beginning to show. People creating java applets, news tickers, visit counters, web polls, etc. have begun to adopt the standards set by the leading banner advertising institutions.

This is as a result of the fact that the only common thing webmasters consider when they lay out their pages, is the size of banners.

By adopting these standards, those creating additions to webpages (webpolls etc.) minimize the risk that their products will not be used because they don't fit into the layout.

Therefore it might be wise to take the standards into consideration - even if you do not plan to host banners.
